M 42 (also called the Orion Nebula) is a diffuse nebula complex in the constellation Orion. It is one of the brightest nebulae and is also visible to the naked eye. M 42 is 1.344 light years away from earth and spans over 24 light years. The nebula in the upper section is called M 43 (de Mairans nebula)
