NGC 1316

NGC 1316 is a lenticular galaxy (and also a bright radio galaxy) in the constellation Fornax, about 60 mio. light years away. The galaxy has a compact inner disk with dust lanes, the outer envelope of stars contains many loops and arcs. Based on scientific results this is caused by the merger of several smaller galaxies. There are also two companion galaxies in the field: NGC 1317 and NGC 1310.
