NGC 55 is a Magellanic type barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Sculptor. With its distance of about 6.5 mio. lightyears it is one of the closest galaxies to the local group. Robert Burnham Jr. called this galaxy "one of the outstanding galaxies of the southern heavens".
